Concept Statement

"Tuku tuku tiki taka Que recanija calaca -

Death runs into a bride, once upon a time—and says to the young woman - “Tu novio - It is his time."

-La Muerte

Alebrijes is based off the real life Pedro Linares, creator of the alebrijes, and in colorful fashion spins a heartfelt comedy. With heavy inspirations del Dia de Los Muertos, it took the audience into the underworld with the famous artist to bring back the spirits of his late brother.

The source material invited me to create a world that was both relatable and out of this world. The hardest part of this process was trying to make this dichotomy work without sacrificing the fun and bright atmosphere of the world. Being in an outdoor space invites the use of the unique foliage in the desert gardens to create interesting backdrops to the scenes. Using Warm lights and candles to represent the hot streets of Mexico. While on the other hand, utilizing black light, we sent the audience into a universe that was filled with bright and otherworldly colors.
